Jan Gossaert, seinerzeit berühmt und hoch geschätzt, war bei verschiedenen Fürsten als Hofmaler tätig und gilt als der Begründer des neuen romanistischen Stils in den Niederlanden. 1508-09 reiste er in Begleitung Philipps von Burgund, eines humanistisch gelehrten Fürsten, nach Rom, wo er im Auftrag seines Mäzens nach antiken Monumenten zeichnete. Zu einem nicht erhaltenen römischen Skizzenbuch dürfte die Berliner Ansicht des Kolosseums gehört haben. Das sogenannte Kolosseum, ein um 80 n. Chr. errichtetes Amphitheater – bis zum heutigen Tag ein Wahrzeichen Roms −, ist von Westen her gesehen. Der Zeichner stand dicht am Bauwerk, sodass er nur wenige Achsen wiedergab. Der Baubefund, wie er sich in jenen Jahren darstellte, ist mit der feinen, spitzen Feder minuziös erfasst: die einzelnen Mauerringe und ihre Abbrüche, die Säulenordnungen und die aus dem Mauerwerk hervorwachsenden Bäume. Gossaert war wie alle nordischen Künstler vor und nach ihm von dem ruinösen Zustand des antiken Monumentes, das die Zeit überdauert hatte, fasziniert. Doch er sah das Bauwerk mit den am spätgotischen Stil geschulten Augen des Nordländers: Es gelang ihm nicht so recht, seine wahre Monumentalität zu erfassen.

Jan Gossaert, famous and highly valued already during his lifetime, worked as a court painter for several princes and was considered the founder of the new Roman-influenced style of painting in the Netherlands. In 1508 and 1509, he traveled to Rome in the entourage with the humanistically trained Philip of Burgundy to Rome. There he was commissioned by his patron to draw the ancient monuments. The Berlin view of the Colloseum is most likely from this no longer extant Roman sketchbook. The so-called Colosseum, an amphitheater built in 80 AD that remains a trademark of the city today, is depicted from the West. The draftsman is close to the structure, so that he only presents a few of the axes. The state of the structure in the years of its depiction is captured with the fine, sharp pen meticulously: the individual rings of the wall and the ruined arches, the lines of columns and the trees emerging from the brickwork. Gossaert, like all Northern artists, was interested especially in the ruinous state of the Ancient objects that had lasted through the ages. But he also saw the structure with the eyes of a northerner, schooled in the late Gothic style. He was not quite able to do justice to its true monumentality.
