In both composition and motif, Saenredam’s enchanting study echoes the front and back side of a sketchbook page by Van Heemskerck. The cityscapes are borrowed from the view of Rome from Monte Mario, while the two tree studies resemble Van Heemskerck’s sketch of a tree from a relief.
