Bildnis eines Astronomen

Das geheimnisvolle Portrait wurde auf Grund der Armillarsphäre (dreidimensionales Modell des Kosmos), die der Dargestellte in der linken Hand trägt, als Astronom identifiziert. Die Symbolik dieser Darstellung lässt sich schwer entziffern. Das in Rot gebundene Buch und die Lorbeerzweige verweisen vielleicht auf den Ruhm eines Gelehrten, eines Professors für Astronomie – ein Eindruck, der vom schwarzen Mantel mit Hermelinärmel bestätigt wird. Ungewiss ist die Bedeutung des gen Himmel fliegenden Vogels und vor allem die der gemeißelten Inschrift auf der Brüstung mit dem griechischen Wort „epighinomenois“, das heißt „den Nachkommenden“. Die lateinischen Ziffern „XI VIII“ könnten, wenn man annimmt, dass „XLVIII“ gemeint ist, also 48, möglicherweise das Alter des Mannes bestimmen. Ein Lichtreflex trifft die kreisförmige Lamelle der Armillarsphäre genau zwischen den Sternzeichen Löwe (LEO) und Jungfrau (VIRGO); er verweist damit möglicherweise auf eine Geburtsprophezeiung des Astronomen im Monat August.

Auf der Brüstung unter der griechischen Inschrift AN XI VIII

The sitter has been identified as an astronomer based on the object held in his left hand - an armillary sphere (a three-dimensional model of the celestial sphere). However, it is hard to decipher the symbolic meaning of the picture. The red leather-bound book and the laurel branch refer perhaps to his reputation as a scholar, possibly an Astronomy professor, an interpretation which is supported by the black cloak with ermine sleeves. Unclear is the significance of the flying bird and the carved inscription on the parapet, which contains the Greek word „epighinomenois“, which is dedicated “to the descendants“. The Roman numerals „XI VIII“ could read ‘XLVIII’, that is 48, and may refer to the sitter’s age. A ray of light strikes one of the brass rings of the armillary sphere exactly between the Zodiac signs LEO and VIRGO, possibly referring to a birth prophecy issued by the astronomer in the month of August.
