Bildnis eines jungen Mannes / Vermutlich Matteo Sofferoni

Kennt man eine halbseitige Verschattung des Gesichts und tief liegende, sinnend in die Ferne schweifende Augen schon von den früheren Porträts Franciabigios, so verdanken sich die schlanken Proportionen und fest geformten glatten Oberflächen im reifen Berliner Bild der Auseinandersetzung mit Sebastiano, Andrea del Sarto und Pontormo. Zur meditativen Stimmung passt die durch das detaillierte Stilleben im Vordergrund definierte Tätigkeit ebenso wie die tiefgrauen, über dem Horizont geröteten Wolken. Die Identifizierung mit einem von Vasari genannten Porträt des Matteo Sofferoni entbehrt jeder gesicherten Grundlage. The shadow over half the face and the deep-set eyes looking thoughtfully into the distance are familiar from Franciabigio’s earlier portraits, but the slender proportions and firm, smooth surfaces in the Berlin picture are due to the artist’s familiarity with the work of Sebastiano, Andrea del Sarto and Pontormo. The young man’s work, defined by the detailed still life in the foreground, suits the meditative mood as do the dark grey clouds, reddening at the horizon. The picture has been identified with a portrait of Matteo Sofferoni mentioned by Vasari, but there is no firm evidence for this.
