Der erfolgreiche Tiermaler Paulus Potter spezialisierte sich als erster holländischer Künstler auf die Darstellung von Rindern und anderem Nutzvieh als eigenständiges Bildsujet. Charakteristisch für seine frühen Kompositionen ist deren monumentale Wirkung selbst im kleinen Format, wie bei diesem Stier: Der Umriss seiner dunklen Gestalt hebt sich eindrucksvoll vor dem üppig bewölkten Himmel ab.
