Die Heimsuchung Mariae
Objektbeschreibung
Nachdem der Engel Gabriel Maria verkündet hatte, dass sie Jesus gebären würde, ging Maria, die befreundete Elisabeth, die zukünftige Mutter Johannes' des Täufers, zu begrüßen, die bis dahin unfruchtbar gewesen und nun schwanger war. „Als Elisabeth den Gruß Marias hörte, hüpfte das Kind in ihrem Leibe. Und Elisabeth wurde vom heiligen Geist erfüllt und rief laut und sprach: Gesegnet bist du unter den Frauen, und gesegnet ist die Frucht deines Leibes!" (Lukas 1, 39-42).
Rechts, in der Türöffnung sieht man Zacharias, den Mann der Elisabeth, links im Hintergrund sattelt Joseph den Esel ab.
Zugehörig ist ein Gegenstück, die „Geburt Mariae", in der Sammlung Catello in Neapel. Die zwei Bilder, beide früher Stanzione zugeschrieben, waren vermutlich Lateralbilder einer Marienkapelle.
After the archangel Gabriel announced the coming birth of Christ to the Virgin she went to greet her friend Elizabeth, the future mother of John the Baptist, who had been barren until then and was now pregnant. "When Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: and she spake out with a loud voice, and said, 'Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb" (Luke 1, 39-42).
In the doorway on the right one sees Zacharias, Elizabeth's husband; behind to the left Joseph saddles the donkey.
The painting has a companion piece, the "Birth of the Virgin" (Naples, Catello Coll.). The two pictures, both formerly ascribed to Stanzione, were presumably lateral paintings in a Chapel dedicated to the Virgin.
