Sofonisba Anguissola ist die erste bekannte italienische Künstlerin mit einem umfangreichen Oeuvre. Sie war international berühmt und arbeitete ab 1560 am Hof König Philipp II. in Madrid. Das Porträt zeigt wohl ihre Mutter, die einer bedeutenden Cremoneser Adelsfamilie entstammte. An einer Kette trägt sie ein Zibellino, ein mit Gold und Edelsteinen verziertes Modeaccessoire aus teurem Pelz.
