Bildnis eines Mannes (beidseitig bemalt)

Ursprünglich war das Porträt die rechte Hälfte eines Diptychons. Das zugehörige Gegenstück, die Darstellung der Muttergottes mit dem Kind, befindet sich heute in der Kartinnaja Galereja von Tambov in Russland. Den Hintergrund des Porträts bildet eine sommerliche Landschaft mit bizarren Felsen und antiken Ruinen, die Scorel während seines Aufenthaltes in Italien studieren konnte. Der Künstler war 1522 durch Papst Hadrian VI. zum Verwalter der päpstlichen Antikensammlung des Belvedere ernannt worden. | Prestel-Museumsführer – Gemäldegalerie Berlin, 2017

This portrait was originally the left-hand half of a diptych. Its companion-piece, a portrayal of The Mother of God with Child, is now in the Kartinnaia Gallery of Tambov in Russia. The background is a summer landscape with bizarre rocks and ancient ruins, which Scorel had been able to study during his stay in Italy. The artist has been appointed inspector of the papal antique collection in the Belvedere by Pope Hadrian VI in 1522, an office previously held by no less than Raphael. | Prestel Museum Guides – Gemäldegalerie Berlin, 2017
