From a
Münster family of artists, Ney was considered an exceptional talent and was one
of the most important women sculptors of the 19th-century. In 1852, she was the
first woman to study sculpture at Munich’s academy der Künste. Ney then applied
successfully for a scholarship at the Berlin’s Akademie and entered the studio
of the Berlin sculptor Christian Daniel Rauch. She portrayed important
personalities, received state commissions and was represented at the Paris
International Exposition in 1867 with a bust of Bismarck. In 1871, she
emigrated to Texas, where after her death a museum dedicated solely to her was
