Hildebrand is considered a pioneer of modern sculpture in Germany. Held in high esteem by many of his colleagues, in his theoretical treatise »The Problem of Form« he reflected on perception and the effects of sculptural form. Setting himself apart from the still common emotionality of the Neobaroque, he pleaded for a concentration in representation on the timeless being of the figures. Sleeping Shepherd Boy was created in Florence commissioned by art historian Conrad Fiedler, whose collection with numerous works by Hans von Marées and other German Romans was acquired by the Nationalgalerie. | Yvette Deseyve
